Then What Happened? (Ep1)

Ever wonder what comes after a happy ending? In this series I will explore my take on the consequences of the events in some of my favorite movies. 

Hocus Pocus (1993)


     It wasn't immediately apparent, but the brief time Max spent in Winifred Sanderson's grasp took it's toll. Max aged before Allison and Dani's eyes and by the time he graduated high school he was nearly unrecognizable. Plagued with arthritis, heart problems, and finally dementia Max lashed out and blamed Dani for his lost youth. The pressure and guilt was too much for her, and she ran away from home at 16. Doctors were baffled by his sudden and extreme condition and could offer no remedies or even treatment. His parents tried to care for him at home, but his anger and violent nature finally forced them to put Max in a home by the age of 25. He passed away before this 30th birthday.
     Allison stayed with Max for 2 years following the incident, even going so far as to delay college to stay with him. However as the years passed he grew weaker, sicker, and more resentful. Eventually his unpredictable mood swings and violent outbursts led to her leaving him in the spring of 1997. Allison attended Yale and went on to become a fairly successful public relations representative for a large corporation. She eventually married and moved to upstate New York, a familiar landscape absent the reminders of her troubled teen years, to raise her children.
     Dani never got over the loss of Binx. Her prepubescent mind created a model in him that no man in her life could ever live up to. Coupled with the loss of her brother as well as his accusations and blame, she developed anxiety and rage issues herself and fell into a self harming cycle that saw her drop out of school, leave home, and get involved in drugs. Determined not to lose both children, her parents sent her to rehab several times. Dani always wound up back where she started, and the stress of caring for Max and Dani finally led to Mr. Dennison suffering a heart attack and the couple being unable to continue supporting Dani. She currently sleeps in bus stations, collects stray cats and spends her Halloweens haunting the parties in Salem, screaming at and sometimes assaulting anyone she sees wearing a witch costume.

    I like the idea of this and it would totally make sense for Max to have some sort of issues afterwards as Winifred sucked out like... half of his essence.
    I can't wait to read more of your ideas!

Flight or Flight

I don’t go downtown often, only a few times a month to do laundry. When I do I like to walk around town and stop in the little hipster tea house on Hall Street. It’s a little overpriced, but I like to shop local when I can. I usually get a chai tea, hot or iced depending on the weather. This day I felt like trying something new. The tea house is in an old converted building made of old wooden beams. Everything is slightly tilted or warped. There’s barely enough room inside for the counter and a row of benches and small tables along the wall. If anyone pulls up a chair to one of the tables they risk cutting off the line to the counter. It doesn’t feel too cramped though, on account of the two huge bay windows that flood the whole place with lots of natural sunlight. There’s a young person in nearly every seat. Let’s look at a popular saying that has been floating around for a long time: Needless to say, this is an oversimplification. No one reading this is going to gladly admit that they have a “small mind.” Not only is this theory problematic, but the elitist and self-serving nature of it is perilous. The idea that if you do X then you are A is too easy. Many different people do many different things. Athletes eat ice cream, comedians read war novels, award winning physicists watch cartoons. To say that a great mind such as a Harvard professor or a renowned philosopher never engaged in a little gossip is absurd. To wonder and talk about what it means to be human, why we are alive, what is truth and justice is a natural human behavior. One might even say it is what separates us from the animals.
